Blue Bombers clinch playoff berth with win over lions
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers fended off a valiant fourth-quarter comeback attempt from the BC Lions, holding on for a 26-20 victory to clinch a playoff berth.
Winnipeg led 26-6 midway through the fourth quarter, but BC quarterback Jonathon Jennings connected with Bryan Burnham for two touchdown passes. However, it was too little, too late, and the Blue Bombers moved to 11-4 while the Lions dropped to 6-9.
The Blue Bombers offense relied on contributions from their special teams and defense, with Kevin Fogg returning a punt 88 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring. Justin Medlock kicked consecutive field goals and added a single as the Blue Bombers entered halftime with a 14-3 lead.
Blue Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols finished 23-of-30 for 172 yards while Jennings went 24-of-39 for 267 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
