Haney retains undisputed lightweight titles over Loma in shock result

The two best lightweight boxers in the world delivered a fight for the ages on Saturday with Devin Haney claiming victory, albeit in questionable fashion.

Haney retained his undisputed lightweight championship over Vasiliy Lomachenko by unanimous decision at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The judges scored the fight 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 in favour of Haney, despite the two fighters having a tightly-contested bout throughout the 12-round affair.

The action was fast-paced right from the opening bell, with Haney focusing much of his attention on Lomachenko's body in the early rounds courtesy of sharp right hands.

Meanwhile, Lomachenko found much of his early success leading with a double left hand, allowing the Ukrainian to get near to the champ with speedy combinations.

Lomachenko looked like the stronger fighter in the championship rounds, with most of the fans in Las Vegas siding with "The Matrix" as the two combatants battled to the final bell.

Loma was clearly disappointed following the loss, but the 35-year-old thanked the crowd for their support and hinted that he would continue his boxing career.

"I think I showed I can be in boxing, I'm in good shape, and see you next time," he said, according to Top Rank Boxing.

Following his post-fight in-ring interview, Lomachenko was seen crying in his locker room. He told the Top Rank broadcast he was emotional because he felt like he disappointed his son, who told him he would bring the titles home to the Ukraine.

With the loss, Loma's professional record dropped to 17-3.

Haney remains undefeated at 30-0, setting up a potential future showdown with Shakur Stevenson, who challenged the champion in the wake of Saturday's contest.
