Canelo Alvarez's return to his homeland resulted in victory.

The undisputed super middleweight champion defeated a tough competitor in John Ryder by unanimous decision 120-107, 118-109, and 118-109 at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday.

It was Alvarez's first professional fight in Mexico since 2011.

Alvarez bloodied Ryder's nose in the second round, and it got worse by the third. The champion followed with a fifth-round knockdown of Ryder via a straight right hand.

Ryder recovered from the knockdown and put together a gutsy performance by going toe-to-toe in mostly close quarters with Alvarez for the remainder of the bout.

Ryder showed life in the later rounds as Canelo appeared to be set on trying to knock out his opponent in front of a jam-packed Mexican audience. However, the British fighter showed a good chin and made it to the final bell.

"Yeah, he's a very strong fighter. He came here for everything," Alvarez said after the fight concluded.

Alvarez pushed his record to 59-2-2 with the victory. Ryder's record fell to 32-6.

"Cinnamon" said after the win he wants his next fight to be a rematch against Dmitry Bivol at light heavyweight. However, Bivol wants to come down in weight to challenge Alvarez for his super middleweight titles.

"Everybody knows we want a rematch with Bivol," Alvarez said before explaining he won't fight Bivol at any weight except 175 pounds.

Bivol defeated Alvarez at 175 in May 2022.
