Roma is hopeful club legend Francesco Totti will extend his stay in the capital after offering him a six-year contract to become a club director.

Club president James Pallotta wasn't willing to discuss the possibility of the 40-year-old continuing his career on the pitch, but revealed that there's an offer on the table for Totti to extend his time with the club he's been associated with since 1989.

"We've not spoken (about his playing future) but Francesco has a six-year contract as a director," Pallotta told Gazzetta dello Sport, as translated by ESPNFC's Ben Gladwell.

"Our objective now is to qualify for the Champions League, even if the season's not over yet because (league leaders) Juventus still have to play Napoli so I'm hoping for a draw in that game.

"We've just got to think about this now, not about contracts. I'm confident we can finish second. The Champions League is where this club belongs. We've slowed down a bit, but I think we'll pick up the pace again towards the end."

Totti has only managed to appear in one match as a starter under coach Luciano Spalletti this term, continuing a trend that began last season when he was reduced to a backup role.

Despite his limited playing time last year, Totti was offered a one-year contract after seemingly rejuvenating his career late in the season when he scored four goals during Roma's unbeaten run to closeout the 2015-16 campaign.

This year, Totti has scored twice and provided seven assists during 17 appearances in all competitions.
