Jose Callejon earns Spain recall following 2-year absence

The Spain squad has been announced for upcoming World Cup qualifiers in October, with Jose Callejon - who hasn't represented his country since November 2014, when he won a pair of caps - earning a surprise recall.

Julen Lopetegui will look to exact revenge on Italy on Oct. 6, after the Azzurri booted his predecessor Vicente Del Bosque's ranks from the Round of 16 at Euro 2016. Spain then rounds off the latest bout of fixtures with a trip to Albania three days later.

While Callejon's inclusion may come as a shock to some, it's reward for a fine start to the Serie A season with Napoli, where he's bagged five goals and two assists over six appearances. Instead, selections that have caused some consternation and surprise for Spain fans are those of Nacho and Isco - talented, yet seldom-used Real Madrid representatives.

The squad also faces question marks over the continued exclusions of Hector Bellerin - who has started the Premier League campaign with Arsenal in great form - and Atletico Madrid stalwart Juanfran. Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas and Manchester United's Juan Mata remain at home too.

Here's the Spain squad in full:

Goalkeepers: David De Gea (Manchester United), Sergio Rico (Sevilla), Pepe Reina (Napoli)

Defenders: Sergi Roberto (Barcelona), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich), Nacho (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Koke (Atletico Madrid), Jose Callejon (Napoli), Thiago (Bayern Munich), Saul (Atletico Madrid), David Silva (Manchester City), Isco (Real Madrid)

Forwards: Alvaro Morata (Real Madrid), Vitolo (Sevilla), Nolito (Manchester City), Lucas Vazquez (Real Madrid), Diego Costa (Chelsea)
