Icardi left off Argentina squad for October qualifiers

Inter hitman Mauro Icardi is still waiting for Argentina to call him back.

Despite a scorching start to his season - with six goals in as many Serie A matches - Icardi was once again overlooked by his country Wednesday for World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Paraguay on Oct. 6 and 11.

He has just a single international cap on his resume - an eight-minute appearance as a sub during the 2014 World Cup.

The strikeforce is still armed with household names, including Juventus duo Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala and Manchester City poacher Sergio Aguero.

Atletico Madrid's Angel Correa - who scored an important equaliser against Barcelona last week - is also in the squad.

Argentina can clearly afford to leave out talent like Icardi, but it's a preponderance that requires explanation. No other player in the big five European leagues has scored more than the 23-year-old so far this season, and he's not currently embroiled in any disciplinary situation.

There appeared to be an opportunity for Icardi to make the team once Lionel Messi went down with a hamstring injury. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner will spend the international break recovering from the setback.
