Giovinco excluded from Italy's pre-Euro 2016 training camp
After deciding to let his regulars prepare for their respective domestic cup finals, Italy coach Antonio Conte elected to call up seven new players for training camp this week.
Neither of Italy's standouts in Major League Soccer, Sebastian Giovinco and Andrea Pirlo, made the cut. But there was better news for Sunderland striker Fabio Borini and Bologna goalkeeper Antonio Mirante, who return to the Azzurri for the first time in the Conte era.
Meanwhile, Empoli's Lorenzo Tonelli, Genoa's Leonardo Pavoletti, Torino's Marco Benassi and Davide Zappacosta, and Lazio's Danilo Cataldi each earned their first international nods.
Twenty-eight players in total will begin a four-day training stint Wednesday at the Coverciano facility in Tuscany. Potential internationals competing in domestic cup finals this weekend will not take part, including those representing Juventus and AC Milan (Coppa Italia), Paris Saint-Germain (Coupe de France), and Manchester United (FA Cup). Anderlecht is currently involved in Belgium's playoffs, meaning striker Stefano Okaka will also be unavailable.
An exception was made for Leonardo Bonucci, who is suspended for Juve's final on Saturday.
Conte will announce his preliminary squad next Monday, with the final roster expected to be finalized by May 31.
It seems unlikely that any of the non-starters who haven't been selected for the camp would make any subsequent squad. Giovinco, the reigning MLS MVP, would count himself among those on the outside looking in.
