Sabres captain Gionta to miss season opener with lower-body injury

The Buffalo Sabres will play their season opener without their captain.
Brian Gionta will miss Thursday's game against the Ottawa Senators due to a lingering lower-body injury.
The 36-year-old was hurt during Tuesday's practice and was classified as day to day.
Gionta was named captain for the second straight season Sunday.
