Brent Sopel - a journeyman on defense who played 659 NHL games for several franchises - has retired, according to Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune.

The 38-year-old former sixth-round pick spent time in the NHL, KHL and AHL in recent years and was playing for the St. Louis Blues' AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, when he decided to call it quits.

Sopel spent the majority of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks.

"While each professional season holds a special place in my heart, the years I spent with the Blackhawks are my fondest memories," said Sopel.

Sopel recorded 218 points in his NHL career. His best season was with the Canucks in 2003-04 when he earned 42 points in 80 games.
