NHL Game Summary - Carolina at NY Rangers

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Cam Talbot made 18 saves in backstopping the surging New York Rangers to a 1-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday night in the back end of a home-and-home set.

Ryan McDonagh scored in the first period to give Talbot all the support he needed. The backup goaltender, who signed a contract extension on Friday, has three wins this season, all coming via shutout.

"It was a lot of fun, not a whole lot of work, so it's always a good thing," Talbot said. "The guys played really well in front of me and they didn't give them a whole lot of quality opportunities which is always nice when you haven't played a game in a few weeks."

The Rangers won their season-high sixth straight game and continued their home dominance against the Hurricanes, who have dropped eight in a row at Madison Square Garden.

Anton Khudobin played well for Carolina, making 30 saves, but he still remains in search of his first win this season.

The Hurricanes have lost eight of their last nine games overall.

Derek Stepan set up McDonagh on the game's lone goal, sending the puck out from behind the net that the New York captain one-timed past Khudobin.

The Rangers appeared to go up 2-0 early in the second period, but a video review resulted in a no-goal call.

Talbot needed to make only four third-period saves to register his sixth career shutout.
