Gibson solid as Ducks top Canucks

ANAHEIM, Calif. - John Gibson made 25 saves for his third career shutout to lead the Anaheim Ducks to a 4-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night.

Shawn Horcoff, Rickard Rakell, Jakob Silfverberg and Corey Perry scored and Anaheim won for only the second time in its last five games. 10 different Anaheim players had a point in its biggest rout of the season. Ryan Miller stopped 25 shots while Vancouver was shutout for the first time this season.

Gibson made his NHL debut against Vancouver in the 2014 playoffs, stopping all 18 shots to eliminate the Canucks. Gibson nearly had another shutout last Friday against the Chicago Blackhawks, the other team he has blanked during his brief career, but blew a 2-0 lead in that one.

Horcoff put Anaheim ahead just 1:19 into the opening period, taking Andrew Cogliano's pass and converting a one-timer.

Miller's ongoing inability to control the puck cost Vancouver at the end of the first period when Rakell scored on the power play with 2 seconds remaining. Miller crept out well in front of his crease to intercept a pass from Sami Vatanen to Ryan Getzlaf, but couldn't cover it up. After Getzlaf took several failed whacks, Rakell chipped in his sixth goal of the season.

Silfverberg ripped a shot past Miller 1:00 into the third period. Nick Ritchie recorded his first NHL point by finding Silfverberg barreling into the offensive zone.

Perry scored a breakaway goal midway through the final period. That prompted coach Willie Desjardins to finally pull Miller, who sulked straight up the tunnel toward the locker room as Jacob Markstrom came in.

Anaheim's offensive struggles during the start of the season have drawn attention, but its stout defense was tremendous in shutting down the Sedin twins in this one. Daniel Sedin had a streak of seven straight games with a point ended, while Henrik Sedin was held off the scoresheet after six consecutive games.

The usually-chippy affair between the Pacific Division opponents lived up to its billing, with Chris Stewart bowling over Bo Horvat in the first period. The Vancouver center in turn plowed into Miller, who ended up inside his own goal after making a save, prompting a video review that determined the play had been whistled dead before the puck cross the line.

Vancouver forward Jake Virtanen (upper body) did not return after taking a cross-check from Getzlaf in the first period.
