NHL Game Summary - Washington at Carolina

Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Anton Khudobin posted his first shutout of the season as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Washington Capitals 3-0 on Friday.

Khudobin made 28 saves, while Brett Bellemore, Jeff Skinner and Nathan Gerbe all scored for the Hurricanes, who have won three of their last four games.

"I had to save whatever came close to me," said Khudobin. "I was seeing the puck better."

Braden Holtby stopped 35 shots, but received no offensive support as the Capitals lost their third straight game on the heels of a four-game winning streak.

"We haven't had good starts," Washington head coach Barry Trotz said. "Carolina does a good job when they get the lead."

After dominating the majority of the first period, Bellemore opened the scoring on a shot from the right point that went past a screened Holtby with 2:39 left in the frame.

Skinner made it a 2-0 game just past the midway point of the second on a wrister from the high slot.

In the third, Holtby made an aggressive play as he charged out of his net up to the right circle, where he swept the puck away from Skinner to keep it a two-goal game.

Khudobin turned aside 10 shots in the final stanza and Gerbe scored on an empty net with 11 seconds left to ensure the win.
