The Philadelphia Eagles released quarterback Tim Tebow ahead of Saturday's 53-player roster deadline.
This may signal the end of the line for the intensely polarizing passer.
Tebow was out of football for two seasons before signing with the Eagles in April, but his preseason play made it apparent he still lacks several of the fundamental skills necessary for success at quarterback in the NFL.
The Eagles' trade of quarterback Matt Barkley to the Arizona Cardinals on Friday, combined with Tebow's strong play in the Eagles' preseason finale, created optimism that Eagles head coach Chip Kelly would keep Tebow around.
It simply didn't come to pass.
Kelly addressed the decision Saturday, saying Tebow's performance in the final preseason game wasn't enough to guarantee him a roster spot.
The Eagles plan to add a third quarterback behind starter Sam Bradford and backup Mark Sanchez, Kelly added. Reports suggest the team is interested in former first-round pick Christian Ponder.
What's next for Tebow? He has a long and likely very lucrative career in broadcasting waiting for him whenever he decides to return. It's also possible he will continue to seek a playing career, though he may need to explore avenues like the CFL to make it happen.
