Report: Lions dispute Buccaneers' offer sheet to George Johnson

Tim Fuller / USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Detroit Lions defensive end George Johnson to an offer sheet last week, triggering a short window during which the Lions had to decide whether to match the offer.

It turns out the Lions didn't make a decision. Instead, the team has formally disputed the offer sheet.

According to Paula Pasche of The Oakland Press, the NFL and the Lions are in agreement about the contested offer sheet. It's unclear why they feel it is invalid.

Johnson is a restricted free agent and offer sheets to RFAs from other teams, though rare, are very rarely disputed.

Pasche reported that an impartial arbitrator will rule on the matter in the coming days.
