Russell Wilson not willing to give up dream of playing professional baseball

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson isn't willing to accept that he's only Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

"I never want to kill the dream of playing two sports," Wilson said in an interview with HBO's "Real Sports" set to air later this month, according to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss. "I would honestly play two sports."

The 26-year-old, who is a prospect in the Texas Rangers' system, admitted he doesn't know why he isn't pursuing his baseball dreams more aggressively.

"I may push the envelope a little bit one of these days," Wilson conceded.

One of these days likely means after he's signed a long-term contract extension with the Seahawks. Wilson is still playing under his rookie contract and is due to earn a mere $1.542 million in 2015. A new contract would certainly include at least $60 million in guaranteed money and likely significantly more.

Until the Seahawks commit that guaranteed money to Wilson, it's far too risky for him to pursue baseball. One injury could literally cost him tens of millions of dollars.

Of course, it's likely the Seahawks won't commit a mega-deal to Wilson unless he agrees to put his baseball dreams on the back burner. Though few deny Wilson has the athletic traits necessary to succeed as a two-sport athlete, the financial realities of professional sports make it highly unlikely we'll get to see him try to prove it.
