NFC East Notebook: Eagles have a 'secret network' of coaches; should RG3 see a shrink?

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

Every Monday and Friday, theScore's NFL editors will bring you a roundup of everything you need to know from around the division with the NFC East Notebook.

Washington Redskins

RG3 should see a shrink? Former Atlanta Falcons tight end and current CBS Sports analyst Tony Gonzalez believes Robert Griffin III would benefit from seeing a sports psychologist to gain back some of the confidence he's lost.

"A curious move." Head coach Jay Gruden called the Eagles' decision to release DeSean Jackson "a curious move." He also admitted that Washington did its research before signing Jackson, but found "nothing negative" about him during the process.

Defense off to strong start. Washington Post columnist Jason Reid likes what he's seen from the Redskins defense so far this season, and believes that defensive end Jason Hatcher "could wind up being a bargain" if his knee holds up.

Meriweather returns. Washington's secondary will get a big boost with the return of Brandon Meriweather, who vows to aim lower on his hits following his two-game suspension.

Philadelphia Eagles

Secret coaches and memory devices. According to the Wall Street Journal, Kelly has "a secret network of college professors from across the country" that he leans on all offseason for new ideas. He also reportedly uses memory devices to get his players to memorize formations.

Kendricks "very doubtful." The Eagles will likely be without starting inside linebacker Mychal Kendricks on Sunday as he nurses a calf injury. Head coach Chip Kelly said Kendricks has a Grade 32 strain (which isn't actually a thing).

Marcus Smith hungry for playing time. The rookie linebacker has yet to see a snap this regular season, but could get an opportunity Sunday if Kendricks is unable to play.

Ertz on pace to pass 1,000 yards. Through two games, Zach Ertz has seven catches for 163 yards. Of those seven catches, six have been for 21 yards or longer, which, as Ray Didinger of CSN Philly points out, puts him on pace for more than 1,200 yards. If he reaches that mark, it would be the most ever by an Eagles tight end.

Dallas Cowboys

Romo back at practice. Tony Romo was held out of practice Wednesday with a tight back, but returned Thursday and insists he will be fine for Sunday's matchup against the St. Louis Rams.

Most concerning start. Romo may not be worried about his back, but NFL Media's Gregg Rosenthal has some concerns about the quarterback's play through two games.

Murray "runs angry." Cowboys play-caller Scott Linehan was asked to describe DeMarco Murray's running style Thursday. His answer? "He runs angry."

Shuffling linebackers. With Rolando McCain questionable for Sunday's game, it looks as though the Cowboys will go with linebackers Bruce Carter, Anthony Hitchens, and Kyle Wilber as their starting trio.

New York Giants

JPP isn't worried about the Texans. Despite sitting at 0-2, Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul isn't losing any sleep over Sunday's matchup against the Texans. Asked Thursday what concerns him most about Houston, Pierre-Paul replied, "Nothing."

Manning done in New York? Forbes contributor David Lariviere speculates that Eli Manning and head coach Tom Coughlin could be on their way out of New York at the end of this season.

Beason may visit foot specialist. After re-aggravating his foot injury in the Giants' loss to the Arizona Cardinals, middle linebacker Jon Beason is considering visiting Charlotte-based foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson this week.

Progress on offense. Offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo is feeling good about his offense following what he calls their "best Thursday practice of the year."
