It may seem obvious, but at least Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith can admit his team needs to improve at quarterback after handing a certain someone a four-year, $72-million deal less than a year ago.

Brock Osweiler's first season as the Texans' supposed franchise quarterback had a sub-par result as his 2,957 passing yards ranked 27th in the NFL and his interception total was higher than his touchdowns. Smith said Osweiler's play - along with the rest of the team - needs to improve in 2017.

"We've got to get better production from the quarterback position," Smith said Thursday, according to ESPN's Sarah Bishop. "We've got to get better production from all across our football team. And we've got to do a good job of analyzing our football team, and that's what we're doing now.

"We're spending the time evaluating our football team and trying to figure out where we're strong, where we're weak and how we can go about improving."

Texans owner Bob McNair sent the same message Wednesday, saying Osweiler needs to "step up," and admitted the team could look to add a quarterback in the draft.

Head coach Bill O'Brien said after the season he would need to fully evaluate his quarterbacks before deciding who would be the starter heading into the offseason.

Through 16 starts in 2016, Osweiler set the record for most games with at least 40 pass attempts and under 200 yards passing, doing so four times.
