Report: Browns hoping to start RG3 again this season

Might a Cleveland Browns season spent cycling through quarterbacks come to an end with the Week 1 starter back under center?

After recently designating Robert Griffin III as their lone player to be activated off injured reserve, the Browns are hoping that the dynamic signal-caller can take on the lead role for at least another game this year, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

The potential obstacle for such a strategy is the status of Cody Kessler. As Rapoport adds, the rookie would presumably remain the starter in the event he's able to return from his second concussion of the season and show well down the stretch.

Given the possibility that Kessler be shut down for the rest of the year, though, Griffin continuing to progress with his shoulder injury should give him a realistic chance to get some reps.

The free-agent addition was sent to injured reserve after completing just 12-of-26 passes for 190 yards and one interception in Cleveland's season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

With the Browns likely well-positioned to draft a top quarterback next spring, and Kessler giving the club another promising option on the current roster, Griffin will almost certainly be looking for work elsewhere in the offseason.

Not only would his return to the starting lineup bolster Cleveland's chances of establishing some much-needed momentum heading into the offseason, but it'd also give the former first-round pick an opportunity to showcase his abilities for other teams that may have interest in giving him a chance in 2017.
