Bears GM Pace: Franchise tag won't affect Jeffery

The Chicago Bears were unable to come to terms on a long-term deal with franchise-tagged wide receiver Alshon Jeffery prior to the July 15 deadline, meaning he'll be forced to play under the designation in 2016.

However, general manager Ryan Pace isn't concerned that playing on the one-year contract will affect Jeffery's psyche or play.

"Honestly, I feel really good about where he's at right now and kind of where we're at," Pace said, according to Jeff Dickerson of ESPN. "I don't think it's going to affect him at all."

Jeffery will earn $14.599 million during the 2016 season, but the Bears reportedly wanted to ink the former second-round pick to an extension with an annual salary of several million below that figure.

One of the sticking points is believed to be concerns over Jeffery's ability to stay healthy. He didn't miss a start in 2013 or 2014, but was sidelined for seven games last season.

Pace insists that, despite being unable to come to terms, contracts talks were always amicable.

"He's at a good spot right now," Pace said. "And you know, those negotiations were friendly the whole time. And I don't think it's uncommon when you're negotiating off the franchise tag to sometimes not come to an agreement. But that doesn't mean there's any ill will. So now we understand; we can revisit it after the season. But I'm optimistic. He's a talented player. He knows he has to stay healthy. And we'll see going forward."
