Report: Bears, Alshon Jeffery reach stalemate over long-term deal

The likelihood of Alshon Jeffery signing a long term deal with the Chicago Bears this offseason is becoming increasingly less likely, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media.

Jeffery was franchise-tagged in March and the two sides would have to come to an agreement before July 15 or his one-year, $14.6 million contract will automatically kick in.

"There's not a lot of confidence," Garafalo said on NFL Total Access on Thursday. "I sense that both sides really don't feel strongly about this one. That's because Alshon Jeffery's got a $14.6 million tag. The Bears wanted to come in a couple of million below that."

Jeffery's injury history could be a sticking point for the Bears who may not want to lock themselves into a long-term deal with a player who's missed 13 games during his four-year career.

With 2015 first-round pick Kevin White in place as an insurance policy, the Bears can afford to let Jeffery play out his franchise tag and risk losing him to free agency in 2017.
