Former Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best has qualified for the Saint Lucia Olympic track and field team and will become the first person with prior NFL experience to compete in a Summer Olympics.

Best, whose career ended prematurely do to concussions, has been training in Arizona and registered a personal best 100m of 10.16 in April, which qualifies him to run under IAAF rules.

But because Best did not compete in American Olympic Trials or represent the U.S. track team at any significant events, he can represent Saint Lucia, his father's home country.

While many NFL players have competed in the Summer Olympics, all have done so prior to their professional football careers. As many as five current or former NFLers attempted to compete in Rio 2016 but only New England Patriots safety Nate Ebner can join Best at the games if he makes the U.S Rugby team.

Best was selected by the Lions 30th overall in 2010 after a brilliant collegiate career at Cal. During two injury plagued seasons in the NFL he tallied 945 rushing yards, 774 receiving yards, and nine total touchdowns.
