Jaguars' offseason goal: 'Affect the passing game'

The Jacksonville Jaguars may have been the NFL offseason winners with their stellar free-agent class and talented draft haul, which was all part of their plan to attack the passing game.

Led by quarterback Blake Bortles and a group of young stud receivers, the Jaguars had the 10th-best passing offense last season, and general manger Dave Caldwell went after some help on the defensive side this offseason.

"Our goal was to affect the passing game, and we did that, really on both sides of the ball," Caldwell told Lindsay H. Jones of USA TODAY Sports. "All the guys - to get faster. To get faster, younger, more athletic and to help us on third down. I think every player we took, we had that in mind."

Jacksonville added free agents in defensive end Malik Jackson and cornerbacks Prince Amukamara and Tashaun Gipson to their 28th-ranked passing defense. Running back Chris Ivory and tackle Kelvin Beachum were signed on the offensive side.

The Jaguars also possibly struck gold in the first two rounds of the draft, picking up cornerback Jalen Ramsey and linebacker Myles Jack. Both slid further than their talent levels necessarily dictated, but they're pleased to be part of a team with such high expectations.

"It was kind of destiny, I guess you could say, maybe, that we ended up in Jacksonville together," said Ramsey.

After a successful offseason, Jaguars owner Shad Khan expressed this season's goal is to break the team's eight-year postseason drought.
