The New York Giants have selected safety Darian Thompson out of Boise State in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, 71st overall.
Thompson should be a perfect complement to Landon Collins, as he's a playmaker with ball skills, which should allow Collins to hover closer to the line of scrimmage and make plays in the run game.
The G-Men will be hoping Collins takes a big step forward in his second year and Thompson makes an immediate impact, because New York was dead last defending the pass last season.
Darian Thompson Bio
Position: S
School: Boise State
College Experience: RS Senior
Height: 6-2
Weight: 208 lbs.
Strengths
- Little to no wasted movements in making a break on the ball after quickly diagnosing a play developing underneath.
- Established himself as a playmaker in the secondary, racking up 17 interceptions in four seasons at Boise State.
- Works his way through blockers over the middle of the field to find the ball carrier and make a tackle.
- Sound, wrap-up tackler in space.
- Relatively consistent with pursuit angles in run support.
Weaknesses
- Must cut down on the occasional gambles that result in big plays for opposing receivers.
- Athletic testing, and particularly an underwhelming 40-time, raised some questions about maintaining NFL success.
- Can struggle with transition of flipping his hips and turning to run with a receiver downfield.
