Jordi Cruyff, the son of the legendary Dutch visionary who died of cancer on Thursday, has thanked the legions of fans across the globe for their messages of support and thoughtful tributes.

"On behalf of my mother, sisters, and the rest of the family, I would like to say thank you for all the love, kind words and memories that have been shared with us, since yesterday but also over the past few months," Jordi said in a statement on his father's official website. "It has touched us deeply that Johan was such an inspiration to many of you. We would like to express our special thanks to all the doctors and medical staff who have supported us until the end."

Tens of thousands of supporters clad in orange paid their respects to the former Ajax player and manager during Friday's friendly against France. The referee stopped the match in the 14th minute, during which players and fans celebrated the life of Cruyff with a minute's applause.

Jordi confirmed that his family is "making arrangements" to hold a private function for Johan, who is survived by his wife, Danny, and their three children.
