The Netherlands couldn't give supporters much to cheer about in the opening moments of its friendly against France on Friday, shipping two early goals. But by the 14th minute, it didn't matter: The game stopped to celebrate the life of the late, great Johan Cruyff - who inspired many of these fans with his attacking football in the 1960s and '70s.

Supporters unfurled banners and flags and propped up copies of the famous No. 14, the number worn by Cruyff, who died Thursday at the age of 68 after a five-month battle with cancer.

Players and the 50,000 people in attendance applauded for one minute before play resumed.

It was France who looked more up for the occasion from the start. Antoine Griezmann struck a smooth free-kick to open the scoring, and Olivier Giroud doubled the advantage with an uncontested shot in the penalty area.

The Dutch rallied to level the score at 2-2 in the second half courtesy of strikes from Luuk de Jong and Ibrahim Afellay. France midfielder Blaise Matuidi, however, restored the visitor's lead with just three minutes of regular time remaining and spoiled an otherwise respectfully observed night of tribute for the home side.
