Tony Wroten will not practice or play with Knicks this season

Despite signing him to a reported two-year, partially-guaranteed deal on Wednesday, the New York Knicks do not plan to have point guard Tony Wroten play or practice with them this season.

"This was more to garner his rights and put him situations where we can look at him this summer," Knicks head coach Kurt Rambis said of the signing, according to ESPN's Ian Begley.

Wroten, who underwent surgery to repair a torn right ACL last February, played just eight games for the Philadelphia 76ers this season. He averaged 8.4 points and 2.6 assists, while shooting 33.8 percent from the field and 17.6 percent from beyond the arc before being waived in December. Prior to tearing up his knee, though, Wroten was having a solid 2014-15 campaign, leading the Sixers with 16.9 points and 5.2 assists per game.

Wroten is expected to work with New York's trainers and medical staff in preparation for a summer-league stint in which the Knicks can properly evaluate him.

"We'll get an opportunity to work with him over the summer and see what he can bring in summer league and retain his rights so that he's somebody that we can possibly look at in the future," Rambis said.
