Just hours after the legal tampering period took effect, the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins appear to be closing in on the first blockbuster trade of the offseason.

The two sides are trying to finalize a deal that would send linebacker Kiko Alonso and cornerback Byron Maxwell to Miami in exchange for draft-pick compensation, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Both Eagles players have been informed of the deal, which is now pending physicals, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Alonso and Maxwell were prized acquisitions of now former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly last offseason.

The organization has clearly been looking to distance itself from Kelly in the weeks since hiring Doug Pederson as his replacement, though, and completing this deal would be yet another significant step in doing so.

Alonso and Maxwell each fill pressing needs for Miami on the defense side of the ball, upgrading a unit that failed to live up to expectations in 2015.

Alonso would presumably step in as the starting middle linebacker. Maxwell, meanwhile, is the likely No. 1 cornerback replacement for Brent Grimes, who is reportedly expected to be released.
