Mets GM: 'We continue to have conversations with Cespedes' agent'

Last month, New York Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said a deal with Yoenis Cespedes was "pretty unlikely," but the reigning NL champions have yet to rule out the possibility of bringing the talented Cuban back to Queens.

"We continue to have conversations with Cespedes' agent," general manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday at an event for season-ticket holders. "That's all I can say at this time."

Cespedes, who dazzled down the stretch for the Mets in 2015, won't come cheap, after Justin Upton reportedly landed a six-year, $132.75-million deal from the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Last week, Cespedes was still thought to be seeking a six-year deal of his own - worth around $22 million annually - and was reportedly mulling over an offer worth close to $90 million from the Baltimore Orioles before the club re-signed Chris Davis to a seven-year contract.

Despite manager Terry Collins' insistence that Cespedes "wants to come back to New York if he can," the 30-year-old isn't prepared to leave considerable money on the table to stay in Queens, though he might be inclined to pick the Mets over another team, all else being equal, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

A reunion may not happen, then, as Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported last week that the Mets will only "seriously engage" with Cespedes if he shows a willingness to accept a short-term deal.

Acquired from the Detroit TIgers in July, Cespedes bashed 17 homers with a .942 OPS in 57 regular-season games with the Mets, but it remains unclear which teams remain interested in his services.
