The Brooklyn Nets are strongly considering former NBA executive Bryan Colangelo for their open general manager position, according to ESPN's Marc Stein and Mike Mazzeo.

The Nets reassigned Billy King from the job on Sunday, the same day they fired head coach Lionel Hollins.

The report adds that if Colangelo is hired, the Nets would then pursue available big-name coaches such as Tom Thibodeau or Brooklyn native Mark Jackson. The team has already reached out to Thibodeau, according to the Sporting News' Mitch Lawrence.

Colangelo was forced out of his job as general manager of the Toronto Raptors in 2013 when the organization hired Masai Ujiri to oversee player personnel. He stayed on as team president for less than a month before resigning.

After a strong start that landed him the 2007 NBA Executive of the Year award, Colangelo later drew the ire of the Raptors' fanbase as the team stumbled. Prior to Toronto, Colangelo was general manager of the Phoenix Suns for 11 years.

Colangelo has also been linked this season to the Philadelphia 76ers, the team his father Jerry took over as chairman of last month.

As expected, rumors over the weekend regarding the Nets' openings also turned to Kentucky coach John Calipari, who is a close friend of team CEO Brett Yormark. Calipari denied any interest in leaving the NCAA while a report surfaced it would take a price tag of $120 million to make him consider it.
