Steve Kerr could return to Warriors' bench as early as this weekend

Steve Kerr could return to coaching duties for the Golden State Warriors as early as this weekend, interim coach Luke Walton told reporters Wednesday.

"It's obviously a possibility," Walton said prior to Golden State's game in Dallas against the Mavericks. "He hasn't said he's going to. To be honest, I don't think he knows yet."

The Dubs finish 2015 in Texas with a back-to-back that ends Thursday night in Houston against the Rockets. They then return to the Bay Area for a two-game homestand Saturday and Monday.

"I think that's part of why he's on this road trip, to see how his body handles the travel and getting into Houston at 1 a.m. tonight to turn around and play again then get on another plane and fly home and get in late again," Walton added. "So that's part of why he's here on this trip, whether or not this weekend is a realistic return or not."

Kerr has not traveled with the Warriors this season until now, as the 50-year-old recovers from two significant offseason back surgeries for both a herniated disk and a spinal leak.

Walton has quickly built a solid coaching resume for himself in Kerr's absence, overseeing the Warriors to a 29-1 record going into Wednesday - even if all wins are credited to Kerr. In his first taste of running a bench, Walton's name has been thrown into the rumor mill for various possible vacancies around the league.

Kerr himself only has one season of NBA coaching experience, which resulted in an NBA title in 2014-15.
