D.C. United owner reveals new details of 2018 soccer-specific stadium
D.C. United is moving to a new home in three years' time, and Jason Levien, the club's co-owner, provided more details on the status of the team's new soccer-specific stadium.
The club's new digs will offer fans their own home at long, long last, as D.C. United has occupied RFK Stadium for much of its history. Levien provided an update on the progress being made, saying he and his team are "in the design and planning process" at the moment.
"We have been spending hundreds of hours looking at what the new stadium might be, what kind of fan engagement there is going to be, what the team store is going to look like, what the main entrance is going to be, what kind of suites there are going to be, what the field-level seating is going to look like - and it's a lot of fun," Levien told the Washington Post.
"It's exciting to picture it."
Picture it, they did. The team revealed renderings for the new stadium, located at Buzzard Point in Washington, D.C. Levien and the team invested more than $150 million on the project in a joint venture with the city, which was finally approved in July.
Levien also revealed that the Buzzard Point stadium would feature a capacity of anywhere between 18,000 and 23,000 fans. The exact number will be determined by factors around the stadium site.
"One of the things that was key to us in building the stadium in this location was that location trumped all," Levien said. "It's a tricky site with some of its limitations; it's very tight. We want to fit as many seats in as we can, but we want unbelievable sight lines for our fans. So we want to squeeze in the right number of seats.
"We would like to be bigger, but we don’t want to sacrifice the sight lines and experience. Those are driving it and we are looking for ways to engineer the building in such a way to have more seats."
A new stadium isn't the only major change D.C. United has undergone. The team also unveiled its new logo earlier in the month, the third change for the club crest since D.C. United's inception in 1996.
