Cubs' Epstein on rallying from 3-0: 'It's been done before'

Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein knows first-hand that a 3-0 deficit in the League Championship Series isn't insurmountable.

The Cubs executive was, of course, the general manager of the Boston Red Sox when they stunned the New York Yankees in the ALCS in 2004, becoming the first team in history to win the series after dropping the first three games. The Red Sox would go on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals for their first World Series title since 1918.

Epstein and his Cubs now find themselves in a similar position after their 4-2 loss Tuesday to the New York Mets.

"Rumor has it it's been done before," Epstein told reporters.

Epstein also reminded reporters that his current club rattled off nine different win streaks of four games or more during the regular season and that the Cubs have yet to put their best foot forward.

"We haven't played our best baseball and they've pitched really well," Epstein said.

When asked whether his team is capable of pulling off the improbable comeback, Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo borrowed a page out of Epstein's book.

"One New York team has blown a 3-0 lead, let's make it the other New York team," Rizzo said. "That's the way we're going to look at it."
