DFS: NHL Rookie Power Rankings

Here is a look at theScore's weekly list of NHL rookies and whether or not they are worthy of drafting in your DFS lineups at some point this week:

Center

# Name Team GP Goals Assists Points SOG
1 Dylan Larkin Detroit 2 1 2 3 10
2 Jack Eichel Buffalo 3 2 0 2 6
3 Max Domi Arizona 2 1 1 2 4
4 Oscar Lindberg NY Rangers 3 4 0 4 7
5 Connor McDavid Edmonton 2 0 0 0 4

Larkin receives top ranking for two main reasons aside from his great play thus far: He's not afraid to shoot the puck (shots on goal result in half points in most formats) and he plays on Detroit's top line with Henrik Zetterberg and Justin Abdelkader, meaning sustainable success is a possibility. The best matchup for Larkin this week is Friday against the Hurricanes.

Eichel has lived up to the hype so far. Both of his goals have displayed his heavy wrister and hockey IQ. He's currently averaging over 19 minutes per game on the second line with Evander Kane and Marcus Foligno. Buffalo could face a lot of backup goaltenders this year and it could happen Saturday against Tampa Bay.

The explosiveness and high energy play from Domi shows he belongs in the show. His lone goal so far was a beauty snap shot. He's logging top line minutes with Antoine Vermette and Mikkel Boedker during Arizona's surprising 2-0 start. His best matchup comes Saturday at home against Boston.

The biggest surprise among rookies has been Lindberg. Despite having four goals in his first three games, he remains on New York's third line. His 57.1 shooting percentage is impossible to maintain so he's still only worth using in tournament play.

McDavid has stuggled offensively in his first two games, but so have the Oilers. The team only has one goal so far and in soccer it would have been ruled an "own goal". Tuesday could be his - and the team's - breakout night against a Stars squad that lacks a true shutdown defense pairing.

Winger

# Name Team GP Goals Assists Points SOG
1 Artemi Panarin Chicago 3 2 2 4 8
2 Nikolaj Ehlers Winnipeg 2 0 2 2 13
3 Anthony Duclair Arizona 2 0 2 2 1
4 Joonas Donskoi San Jose 2 1 0 1 3
5 Sergei Plotnikov Pittsburgh 2 0 0 0 2

Panarin is in a golden situation: A skilled young sniper playing in Chicago on the same line as Patrick Kane. As long as he remains responsible in his own end, there's no reason why he won't remain in the top six. He's still fairly cheap in most DFS formats so feel free to stack him with Kane and Artem Anisimov in all formats. Chicago has a juicy matchup against Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Ehlers is already one of the fastest players in the league. If he stays on Winnipeg's second line with Mark Scheifele and Mathieu Perreault he should continue to rack up the shots which will eventually lead to goals. His best matchup would be Friday vs. Calgary.

Duclair, Donskoi and Plotnikov are still in the wait-and-see category. Duclair's two assists are promising, but he needs to get more pucks to the net to be DFS worthy. Donskoi is intriguing solely because he plays on a line centered by one of the most gifted play makers of our generation - Joe Thornton. All you need to remember is he made Jonathan Cheechoo a 50-goal scorer. Plotnikov has been bumped down to the third line and is simply on here by default.

Defenseman

# Name Team GP P SOG BLK TOI/G
1 Trevor van Riemsdyk Chicago 3 2 1 2 17:19
2 Noah Hanifin Carolina 2 1 4 2 17:43
3 Joe Morrow Boston 3 0 2 7 19:38
4 Ben Hutton Vancouver 3 2 4 3 18:09
5 Griffin Reinhart Edmonton 1 0 1 2 19:03

Frankly, none of these defenseman have shown enough to prove they are DFS worthy. None of them receive power play time as of yet. Keep a close watch on Hanifin, the first defenseman selected in last year's NHL Entry Draft.
