Dallas Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar will be out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee, an MRI revealed Monday.

Head coach Jason Garrett said Dunbar will have surgery and be moved to season-ending injured reserve soon.

Dunbar injured the knee on a kickoff return Sunday night against the New Orleans Saints. The running back's left foot appeared to stick in the turf, causing his leg to buckle as he fell awkwardly.

Even before the results of the MRI, the Cowboys feared Dunbar was lost for the season.

"He's just one of those guys when the ball is in his hands he does a lot of positive things for your football team," Garrett said about Dunbar. "He's a hell of a kid and he's got a great future ahead of him. He's going to come back. He's going to handle it the right way. He'll be better than ever."

Dunbar was part of the three-headed rotation in the Cowboys' backfield. His loss will presumably force Christine Michael into more playing time, with the Cowboys also likely to rely more heavily on Darren McFadden and Joseph Randle.

The running back was invaluable as a receiver out of the backfield for the Cowboys, catching 21 passes for 215 yards this season.
