Mexican advances aren't enough for Jurgen Klopp to end sabbatical

Mexican Football Federation general secretary Guillermo Cantu admitted his organization approached Jurgen Klopp about serving as Miguel Herrera's successor.

After he ended seven years at Borussia Dortmund in May, Klopp has been on sabbatical with no timeline for a return to football.

Reports circulated that the eccentric German would end his break for a Premier League role, but a foray in the international game with Mexico would not be enough to lure Klopp from his beach towel.

"We sought him out through his agent, but he told us it would not be possible because he wants to continue to take a break for right now," Cantu said on TV Azteca's "Marcaje Persona" via ESPN FC.

Miguel Herrera, who found global fame with his exuberant celebrations on the touchlines at Brazil's 2014 World Cup, was ousted from his role with Mexico after an alleged altercation with a journalist at Philadelphia International Airport. The FMF hasn't been able to secure a replacement since.

Despite his efforts to lure Klopp to Mexico, Cantu admitted that "a coach like Klopp would be at a disadvantage over the short term" because he can't speak Spanish and doesn't know enough about football in the country.

Although he wouldn't reveal details, Cantu said talks are ongoing between the FMF and Sao Paulo boss Juan Carlos Osorio for the managerial role.
