Report: Spurs add Deshaun Thomas to training camp roster

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

The San Antonio Spurs aren't losing the rights to Deshaun Thomas just yet.

The No. 58 pick in 2013 has signed the required tender offered to him by the Spurs, according to international reporter David Pick, a decision that's risky but expected.

Teams have to offer second-round picks a non-guaranteed, one-year, minimum contract in order to retain their draft rights. In most cases, the player won't sign, as they're guaranteed no money and forgo other opportunities in the meantime. In Thomas' case, freeing himself to sign the tender required a tough negotiation with Barcelona, his Spanish league club.

By signing the tender, Thomas will likely join the Spurs for training camp. He's unlikely to make the team, but if he's cut, he'll become an unrestricted free agent, freeing him to land with any NBA team.

Thomas appears to have confirmed signing the tender, posting photos from the Spurs' facility over the weekend.

The Spurs have 13 players under guaranteed contract, and Thomas would make six on deals that aren't fully guaranteed. Considering Matt Bonner and Jimmer Fredette are two of the non-guaranteed deals, each with a significant partial guarantee, Thomas' chances of making the team are slim.

The Ohio State product averaged 7.9 points on 52.4-percent shooting in the Spanish ACB league last season, knocking down 37.4 percent of his threes.
