Report: DeShaun Thomas will sign tender if Spurs offer by Saturday deadline

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

The San Antonio Spurs seem set to lose the draft rights to DeShaun Thomas.

The Spurs have until Saturday to tender the No. 58 pick in the 2013 draft a non-guaranteed minimum contract in order to maintain his draft rights. If they choose not to do so, they would lose his rights, and Thomas would become an unrestricted free agent.

But they may lose him anyway, as Thomas is planning to sign the tender and attend camp if he receives it, according to international reporter David Pick.

While anything is possible, Thomas' chances of making the team would be slim. The Spurs already have 13 guaranteed contracts and two with fairly large partial guarantees, plus some non-guaranteed players heading to camp. Thomas - a forward who averaged 10.8 points and 3.2 rebounds in six summer league games with the Spurs this year - would likely be waived before the season.

Should the Spurs waive him, Thomas would be an unrestricted free agent, serving the same end as the Spurs not tendering him the offer at all. Signing the tender is a risk for Thomas, as time at camp would mean forgoing time with Barcelona or other potential overseas opportunities, but Pick's report suggests that Thomas is eager to open up his NBA options.

Hopefully, he's long since given the Spurs his number so they can get this whole thing sorted out.

The Ohio State product averaged 7.9 points on 52.4-percent shooting in the Spanish ACB league last season, knocking down 37.4 percent of his threes.
