Luke Shaw's 2015-16 season is likely over after the Manchester United defender suffered a gruesome leg injury in Tuesday's Champions League loss to PSV Eindhoven.

Following the match, the club confirmed what seemed to be inevitable after viewing the incident that left the English full-back in agony on the pitch.

Shaw, 20, sustained the stomach-turning injury in the opening half of the match, as a bursting run into the penalty area saw the United left-back taken down by a forceful sliding challenge from Hector Moreno.

The match was halted for roughly 10 minutes as medical staff attended to Shaw, providing him with oxygen and loading him onto a stretcher. Almost immediately, as replays of the incident and the scene developing around Shaw made the severity of the situation clear, fellow players flocked to Twitter to offer their support for the United defender.

Shaw himself took to the social media site to express his thanks for the outpouring of support.

United boss Louis van Gaal said after the contest that he hopes he'll be able to recover in time to return at some point this season, though a timeline will likely not be revealed until Shaw undergoes surgery to repair the double fracture.
