PSV Eindhoven spoils Memphis' return

Memphis Depay's return to the club he joined in 2006 as a 12-year-old was marred by a horrific injury to Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw and horrendous defending by the Red Devils, as PSV Eindhoven won Group B's opening fixture 2-1 at Philips Stadion.

Memphis helped his cause, scoring the first goal of the match in the 41st minute courtesy of an incisive ball from countryman Daley Blind to put the Red Devils up 1-0.

Memphis' exploits and the scoreline won't matter to United supporters and gaffer Louis van Gaal, with Shaw's condition being the sole focal point of a disastrous trip to Eindhoven.

Lost in the discussion of the horrendous Hector Moreno tackle and Memphis' world-class strike was the scoreline, as PSV scored twice unanswered to snatch the three points from the grasp of a defeated and deflated United side.

Adding insult to injury, Moreno scored the equalizing goal, calmly heading a cross past David De Gea after the slightest of touches off the head of Blind.

The tie was cemented in the 57th minute when Luciano Narsingh got on the end of a probing cross from attack-mate Maxime Lestienne, slotting it past a lunging De Gea.

United were poor defensively, with Blind and Chris Smalling yet to form a prosperous centre-back pairing, the Dutchman seemingly out of position on numerous occasions.

PSV were happy to cede 33 percent possession to the Mancunians and attack on the counter, something that resulted in both of the reigning Eredivisie champions goals on a night, as the final whistle was met with rapturous applause by supporters.
