Tigers GM: No decision made on Ausmus' future
Al Avila has spoken and nothing has changed.
The executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Tigers issued a statement on Friday regarding the future of the team's current manager Brad Ausmus, sticking to his word by stating that "evaluations are ongoing and decision in any of these areas will be made by the end of the season."
Avila also addressed the situation with reporters.
"I spoke to Mr. I (owner Mike llitch) today and to Brad and I can reconfirm that our evaluation is ongoing and a decision has not been made," he said. "That report did come as a surprise ... No decision has been made."
After news broke late Thursday that Ausmus would be replaced at the end of the season, rumors swirled about a potential new hire by the Tigers in the management role, with names such as Ron Gardenhire and Rick Renteria surfacing as favorites.
The Tigers hired Ausmus in November of 2013. So far this year, he has led Detroit to a 64-76 record, the club's worst showing since 2008 when it finished 74-88.
Despite the speculation, Ausmus sounded unconcerned about his job security while speaking to reporters Friday afternoon.
"I have a contract," he said. "I will do everything I can to help the Tigers until they tell me they don't want me to help them or until the contract expires, whichever comes first."
