Sam Ukwuachu sentenced to 180 days in jail, 10 years felony probation
Former Baylor defensive end Sam Ukwuachu was sentenced Friday to 10 years of felony probation and 180 days in county jail for the sexual assault of a former Baylor student.
Ukwuachu, who was found guilty Thursday, is also required to serve 400 hours of community service, according to the Waco-Tribune's Tommy Witherspoon.
The defensive end didn't play a snap for the Bears after transferring from Boise State, where he was dismissed for a violation of team rules. Ukwuachu had been serving a suspension for more than a year as a result of the incident. The victim testified that Ukwuachu assaulted her at his apartment.
Baylor head coach Art Briles denied knowing anything about Ukwuachu's behavior at Boise State. However, former Broncos coach Chris Petersen disagreed, saying he personally told Briles about Ukwuachu's behavior.
"After Sam Ukwuachu was dismissed from the Boise State football program and expressed an interest in transferring to Baylor, I initiated a call with coach Art Briles," Petersen said. "In that conversation, I thoroughly apprised Coach Briles of the circumstances surrounding Sam's disciplinary record and dismissal."
The victim was present for sentencing, and read an impact statement, reportedly saying that all males scare her now.
