- Unsure who will be standing across the cage from him during an eventual first title defense, newly minted champion Fabricio Werdum knows one thing for certain: he wants to fight on the Jose Aldo-Conor McGregor undercard rumored for December.
- Among the possible challengers for Werdum's crown, Stipe Miocic makes the most sense. Sporting one of the most well-rounded skillsets in the division, Miocic is 4-1 in his last five, with his lone loss coming against former champion Junior dos Santos.
- Dos Santos, who owns a victory over Werdum (though it feels like a lifetime ago) could make a compelling argument for a title shot himself. Cigano, however, may feel compelled to engage in fisticuffs with Alistair Overeem first. Overeem's been dogging him for a bout for months on social media.
- After being left on the heavyweight scrap heap following four losses in a row, former champion Frank Mir is in the midst of a mini-resurgence, having racked up consecutive knockouts of Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva and Todd Duffee.
