The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Nick Bonino, defenseman Adam Clendening, and a 2016 second-round pick from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Brandon Sutter and a 2016 third-round pick, general manager Jim Rutherford announced Tuesday.

Bonino, signed through 2016-17 at an average annual value of $1.9 million, scored 15 goals and added 24 assists in his lone season with the Canucks after coming over from the Anaheim Ducks in the Ryan Kesler trade.

Sutter recorded 21 goals and 12 assists last season, and remains under contract for one more season at a cap hit of $3.3 million.

The Penguins used those savings to make an additional move Tuesday, signing Eric Fehr to a three-year, $6-million contract.

Clendening was a 2011 second-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, and brings 21 games of NHL experience to his new club.

In terms of the picks, the second-round draft pick acquired by Pittsburgh is Anaheim’s 2016 second-round selection, while the third-round pick that Pittsburgh is sending to Vancouver is the compensatory pick awarded from the Buffalo Sabres for hiring head coach Dan Bylsma earlier this summer.

The trade and Fehr signing boosts Pittsburgh's team depth, and will complement forwards Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Phil Kessel.

From a Canucks point of view, this deal could allow Bo Horvat to adopt a bigger role, while Sutter provides some depth down the middle.
