Salas' rough day allows Thompson to capture Meijer LPGA Classic

It came down to the final hole of the Meijer Classic for Lexi Thompson to earn the fifth win of her career.

Thompson held a one-shot lead over Lizette Salas heading into the final hole of the tournament. Salas, needing a birdie to tie and force a playoff, two-putted for par while Thompson saved from the rough, two-putting as well to also shoot par and maintain her one-shot advantage.

The 20-year-old catapulted past the four-stroke lead Salas held heading into Round 4, distancing herself by three strokes at 19-under from Salas and Gerina Piller late in the round. A bogey on the par-4 17, however, made for the dramatic finish, which Thompson eventually escaped unscathed.

Thompson finished 6-under 65 in the final round, ending the tournament 18-under par, while Salas fired a 1-under 70 on Sunday. Piller and Salas both finished one-stroke behind at 17-under.

This is Thompson's first tournament win of 2015.
