Devils GM Shero on Adam Larsson negotiations: 'I think we'll get a deal done'

New Jersey Devils general manager Ray Shero is confident the team will be able to reach an agreement with restricted free-agent defenseman Adam Larsson.

“I think we'll get a deal done,” Shero told Tom Gulitti of The Record on Friday.

The Devils signed another RFA blue-liner, Eric Gelinas, to a two-year contract Tuesday. Shero believes he'll be able to avoid arbitration with Larsson as well.

“We have time before the arbitration date certainly and we'll see where that leads us, but the goal with Gelinas was to try to agree to a deal we're both happy with and it's the same thing with Larsson. I had a conversation with (agent) J.P. Barry again (Thursday), and I hope within the next few days to have an idea where we're going. We've talked about a lot of different things.”

Larsson's hearing, should the sides fail to agree before then, is scheduled for July 29.

“I would be optimistic we can get something done with Adam," Shero said.

The club and Larsson's camp will reportedly settle on either a two-year contract or a longer-term deal.

“It's what it is, the trade-off vs. (unrestricted free agency) years and all those things,” Shero said.

“That's a guy we would certainly like to sign if we could if it makes sense to (do) a longer-term (contract) and if not (two years) is the fallback for both parties.”

The 22-year-old notched 24 points in 64 games last season, his fourth with the Devils. New Jersey selected Larsson fourth overall in 2011. He carried a cap hit of $900,000 in 2014-15.
