Jack Eichel isn't taking anything for granted.

Selected second overall by the Buffalo Sabres at the 2015 NHL Draft, Eichel is one of the most talented prospects to hit the NHL in years, and is almost assuredly on the cusp of a long and fruitful pro career.

The team announced Friday that Eichel will wear No. 15, but he was quick to caution fans eager to scoop up the sweater that nothing's official until he's on the ice for opening night.

"I think if the opportunity presented itself to make the team and be a part of the Sabres next year, I'd be wearing No. 15," Eichel told Joe Yerdon of NHL.com.

"I had few numbers that I had in mind. I didn't really want to pick one because I didn't want to make it seem like I was content with already making the team," he continued. "It's a number that my sister's worn and my dad's worn and I've worn before. It's their lucky numbers and it happened to be the year I got drafted. I like the number. I think it'd be really nice to wear if the opportunity presents itself to be on the Sabres next year."

Barring injury or a completely disastrous showing at training camp, Eichel is all but guaranteed to crack the Sabres' roster. Still, the extremely talented 18-year-old - who wore No. 9 for Team USA at the World Championship - is tapping the brakes on an official number proclamation.

"Fifteen is not my number until I make the team," he said

Based on his skill set and draft year, the number is likely to be one that Sabres fans will remember and cherish for years to come.
