Detroit Tigers left fielder J.D. Martinez continues to do his part to mitigate the loss of first baseman Miguel Cabrera, as the surging 27-year-old was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday.

Martinez, a 20th-round pick in the 2009 draft, launched four home runs in six games last week, finishing 11-for-24 (.458) with a double and a walk. Heading into Monday's series opener against the Seattle Mariners, Martinez already has 23 home runs this season, matching the career-high he established in 2014, his inaugural season with Detroit.

Aramis Ramirez of the Milwaukee Brewers, meanwhile, took home National League Player of the Week honors after helping his struggling club extend their winning streak to eight games.

The 37-year-old third baseman went 12-for-22 (.545) last week, collecting a home run and a pair of doubles while recording multiple hits in five of his club's last seven games. Despite a shaky start to 2015, Ramirez owns a .724 OPS through 70 games this season, his 18th in the major leagues.
