Marlins option struggling outfielder Marcell Ozuna to Triple-A

Steve Mitchell / USA TODAY Sports

Despite sitting 10 1/2 games out of first place, the Miami Marlins optioned Marcell Ozuna to Triple-A New Orleans following Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Despite owning a .252 average this season, the outfielder has struggled in the past month, batting .200 with one home run and five runs scored. On the season, he has four homers, 14 doubles, and 26 RBIs.

The move comes as a bit of a shock, considering the Marlins are fresh off losing slugger Giancarlo Stanton for an extended period of time.

With that, it would appear as though Miami will use Cole Gillespie, who has accumulated all of 12 at-bats this season.

Ozuna's demotion is the latest in a flurry of changes, as the Marlins optioned Jarred Cosart on Saturday to make room for Michael Morse, who returned from the disabled list.

Either way, it's a fall from grace for Ozuna, who is coming off his first full season wherein he hit .269/.317/.455 with 23 homers, 85 RBIs, and 26 doubles.
