Report: Tigers want to improve pitching; have scouted Marlins starters

Bill Streicher / USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Tigers are eyeing southern Florida for potential help for their pitching staff.

With Shane Greene optioned to the minors and Justin Verlander struggling since coming off a lengthy disabled list stint, the Tigers have reportedly scouted and done preliminary work on the Miami Marlins' available starting pitchers, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.

Following a disappointing start that has the Fish 10 games back in their division, Miami is expected to go into sell mode prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and they have plenty of veteran pieces they could move.

Mat Latos and Dan Haren are the most-likely duo the Marlins could deal as both right-handers are set to hit free agency after the season.

The 34-year-old Haren is 6-5 with a 3.45 ERA across 16 starts, while recording 71 strikeouts and 1.05 WHIP in 99 innings.

After going 33-16 with a 3.31 ERA in three previous seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, Latos' time in Miami has been a struggle. The 27-year-old is 3-5 with a career-high 5.27 ERA across 13 starts, but he has managed a 3.86 ERA with 24 strikeouts across 25 2/3 innings in June.
