Braves' Freeman lands on DL with right wrist contusion

Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman is heading to the disabled list for just the second time in his six-year career.

The two-time All-Star was diagnosed with a right wrist contusion on Tuesday, as an MRI revealed no broken bones. The injury is not considered serious, and the Braves wanted to give Freeman time to let the inflammation go down rather than risk further damage. The move is retroactive to June 18.

Freeman missed his fourth straight game Sunday with soreness in his right wrist, initially suffered during an awkward swing earlier in the week.

The 25-year-old had enjoyed a lengthy stretch of durability before sitting out Thursday, appearing in 234 consecutive games.

Freeman is off to an exceptional start through 66 games this season, hitting .299/.367/.520, and leading the team with 12 home runs, 20 doubles, and 41 RBIs.

Atlanta called up infielder Joey Terdoslavich in a corresponding move.
